I cannot even begin to express how thrilled I am to be attending my first AFROTECH Conference in Houston, Texas! This conference (and location) has been on my bucket list for a very long time, so the stars were aligned for this opportunity to be possible.
For those who may not know, AFROTECH is the world’s largest annual tech conference that brings together tech professionals, entrepreneurs, investors, and creatives to network, learn, and celebrate Black innovation. And this year, it has only gotten bigger.
The Road To AfroTech 2024
Everything is bigger in Texas— including the AFROTECH campus which is reportedly 3x larger than 2023. The conference will feature keynote speakers, panels, workshops, and a series of fun events.
“Our mission is to foster meaningful connections and showcase groundbreaking ideas that drive industry growth,” Morgan DeBaun, Founder, Chairperson, and CEO of Blavity, Inc. shares in a press release announcing the event. “By bringing together top leaders, emerging talent, and dynamic programming, we create a platform that celebrates and accelerates the future of technology and business.”
So far, preparing for AFROTECH 2024 has been a breeze. The website and app have made it easy to map out my week— especially when choosing what panels and events I want to attend.
I’ve already RSVP’d for Toasted Life Presents THE FADE, Industry Link HTX: Built For Us (presented by Google, Jordans, Jerseys, and Jams), Blavity House Party, and the Black Excellence Brunch to name a few.
I‘ve also joined a few GroupMe chats to receive links for parties and a list of things to do in Houston.
Panels I’m Excited To Attend
One of the most exciting aspects of this event is the opportunity to learn from industry leaders and innovators. With a diverse range of panels and workshops, there’s something for everyone. I’m particularly looking forward to these sessions:
— The State of Black Media
Alfred Liggins, CEO of Radio One, explores the challenges facing Black media in today’s evolving landscape. Moderated by Morgan DeBaun, Founder and CEO of Blavity Inc., the session will highlight strategies for elevating Black voices and promoting authentic storytelling.
— Founder’s Summit: Mastering the Pitch with Charles Hudson: Insider VC Strategies for Tech Founders
Join Charles Hudson, Managing Partner of Precursor Ventures, for a fireside chat moderated by KJ Sidberry. Learn about the venture capital landscape, effective pitching strategies, and building investor relationships. Hudson will also share insights on navigating funding challenges and the importance of inclusive entrepreneurship.
— Women’s Summit: Fueling Ambition for Women on the Rise (Presented by Gap Inc.)
This panel discussion features Gabrielle Wesley of Mars Wrigley North America and Jennifer Lynne Williams of the USA Basketball Foundation. Moderated by Zuhairah Scott Washington, this session will explore leadership, strategy, and the future of their respective industries.
— Apple: Building Inclusive Customer Experiences

I am super excited about the opportunity to travel, learn new things, and network with some of the best and brightest in business and tech. I am in a season of transition right now, so AFROTECH is the perfect opportunity to meet new people, submit resumes, and see what Houston is all about.
I will be documenting my experience on social media! To keep up, be sure to follow @BrownStyle on Instagram.
