I’ve Learned That True Productivity Doesn’t Come From Constantly Being On The Go

In my pursuit of success, I became detached— from myself and those around me. It took time to recognize that constantly being “on” isn’t sustainable or healthy.

Working in the event industry is inherently high stress. Planning events are time-sensitive, demand immediate action, and foster a constant “go-go-go” mentality. Thankfully, I’ve learned to find calm within the chaos by setting healthy boundaries and maintaining work-life balance.

For a while, I operated in an unbalanced space, where my personal life was secondary to my career. In my pursuit of success, I became detached— from myself and those around me. I began to notice the effects of this imbalance in my daily life, my emotions, and even my relationships.

Over time, it became clear that relentlessly focusing on advancement alone doesn’t prepare you to carry the weight of the life you envision. True growth requires balance—not just to achieve your goals, but to sustain them.

Building My Dream Career

Growing up in Germany as one of the few people of color in my community presented unique challenges. My experience ultimately instilled in me the understanding that as a Black woman, I had to be exceptional to be seen— especially when you’re forging a path forward in an industry that often lacks visibility for underrepresented groups.

After completing post-graduate studies in Miami— where I explored creativity and culture— I pursued Media Marketing at the University of Central Florida. During this time, I became a certified event planner and officially launched my career in events, entertainment, and experiential marketing.

Shortly after graduating, I moved to New York City to advance my career, joining the National Event team at Rolex. A year later, I transitioned to BET Networks, where I contributed to on-air programming, BET Awards Shows, and innovative marketing strategies for both BET and VH1.

I later joined MVD Inc., where I’ve contributed to the experiential production of high-profile events, including The Black Music Collective Presented by The Recording Academy, Essence Black Women in Hollywood, Mary J. Blige’s Strength of a Woman Festival Presented by Pepsi, Essence Festival: Black Women in Business and the Global Economic Forum.

1% Better Every Day

I am a storyteller, creative, and dreamer. For me, growth is a constant process, and I believe that true creativity lies not only in producing impactful work but also in continuously evolving as an artist and thinker.

This is why I’m currently refining my creative lens through additional coursework in graphic design, creative direction, and immersive brand storytelling. I’ve also independently taken on projects with Kahlua and Perrier Jouet to create and conceptualize immersive brand experiences at Art Basel.

Finding Balance Through Self-Reflection

Several experiences made me realize the importance of work-life balance like missing birthdays (including my own for years), skipping personal travel, feeling perpetually exhausted, and noticing my conversations revolved around work disguised as “passion.” I even lost my sense of self outside of my work.

I had built a reputation for juggling multiple projects and always being on the go. I worked 24/7, seven days a week— often joking that if you’re looking for a 9-to-5, this isn’t the field for you.

These unhealthy tendencies became so ingrained that changing them was challenging and time-consuming. TBH: It’s a process I’m still navigating. It took time to recognize that constantly being “on” isn’t sustainable or healthy.

Over the past few months, I’ve intentionally slowed down to refine my creative vision and reconnect with my priorities. I’ve always prided myself on innovation, but stepping away has allowed me to approach my work with sharper intent and a commitment to growth.

I’ve established boundaries, dedicating specific days to myself and honoring my “Do Not Disturb” schedule. By refusing to sacrifice time with myself or my close circle for work, I’ve gained a healthier perspective on what matters most. I’ve also realized that most “emergencies” aren’t as urgent as they seem. Learning to detach from the chaos and protect your peace takes practice, but it’s transformative. It empowers you to control your reactions and prioritize yourself without guilt.

My Go-Tos For Self-Care

I incorporate frequency listening into my daily routine, focusing on healing tones like 432 Hz, 741 Hz, and 528 Hz. These frequencies are believed to resonate deeply with the mind and body, offering specific benefits like stress reduction, clarity, and inner healing.

Each frequency serves a unique purpose, allowing you to tap into vibrations that align with your specific needs. For example, 432 Hz is often associated with grounding and natural harmony, while 528 Hz is considered the “love frequency.”

Guided meditation and visualization are also powerful techniques I practice daily to stay grounded. In our fast-paced lives, things can quickly become overwhelming and unclear. Taking intentional time to pause is essential for reflecting on ourselves and the world around us.

Through visualization, I gain clarity on what’s happening to me, for me, and because of me. This practice enables me to approach my day with greater intention, purpose, and awareness. It also strengthens my interactions with others and ensures more thoughtful and authentic connections.

Reading has always been a powerful tool for me. It’s like a window into the minds of others, offering glimpses into how they lived, what they learned, and how they navigated the world. Books provide endless opportunities for self-improvement and insights into various subjects. They demand focus and stillness, keeping the mind sharp and the soul nourished. Currently, I’m prioritizing works by Ghanaian, Nigerian, and African American authors. Their stories offer rich cultural perspectives and inspire reflection on my own journey, while continuously expanding my understanding of the world.

Shifting Towards A Softer Life

Prioritizing work-life balance and self-care allows me to live a softer lifestyle. By setting boundaries and carving out time for myself, I am able to approach both work and life with greater clarity and peace. I’ve learned that true productivity doesn’t come from constantly being on the go, but from knowing when to step back, reflect, and nurture my inner self.

Pivoting to a softer lifestyle has allowed me to nurture deeper connections, strengthen communication, and truly appreciate shared moments with those I love.

Finding Growth Through Education And Experience

My advice to anyone struggling to find work-life balance is to start by setting clear boundaries— with yourself and others. Recognize that rest is as important as productivity, and don’t be afraid to say no when it’s necessary.

Prioritizing self-care isn’t selfish; it’s essential. Focus on creating time for what truly matters. Trust that taking care of yourself will ultimately make you more present and effective in every aspect of your life. Balance is a practice, not a destination, so be patient with yourself as you navigate it.
