How To Design A Cozy Space In Your Home For Self-Care And Relaxation

‘Soulful Spaces With Erica Dike’ is BrownStyle Magazine’s new lifestyle column designed to help you transform your space into a space that feeds your soul.

In a world that can be overwhelming, our homes should be a place of refuge. Creating a cozy home is not just about aesthetics; it’s also about designing a space that nourishes your mind, body, and spirit.

Your home should be a living, breathing reflection of your unique needs and preferences. That’s why I highly suggest designing a space in your home for self-care rituals.

Whether it’s a comfy armchair for reading or a well-arranged bathroom, designating a space in your home for self-care will ensure you always have a place to unwind and recharge.

Ahead, find out my quick tips for transforming your “self-care space” into a sanctuary that speaks to your soul.

Create Comfortable Areas

We all have different ways to practice self-care, but whatever that means to you, create a space where you can do so comfortably. For example, if you’re someone who likes to relax by soaking in a warm bath, create a space that fits your mood. For example, display your soaps, bath bombs, and rose petals in chic containers, neatly arranged by your tub. By doing this, you create a relaxing space to decompress and soak your stress away.

If you’re a book lover, find the perfect reading chair, a side table for your drink, and an outlet nearby so you can focus on getting lost in your book.

Opt For Warm And Sultry Lighting

First things first, say no to harsh overhead lighting. Choose a warm glow that’s sultry and inviting. Warm light not only glows, but it mimics the soothing effect of natural lighting.

Give yourself other options by layering soft light in your space. Try stringing fairy lights across a mantle or bookshelves, place soft-shaded lamps on end tables, and my favorite, light some candles (responsibly, of course!). The gentle pools of light and flickering flames will invite you to enter a world of peaceful reflection.

Get Cozy With Layered Textures

Textures are the unsung heroes of cozy decor. Imagine sinking your bare feet into a plush rug (think faux fur or chunky knit) after a long day or running your fingers across a soft throw blanket while curled up with a good book.

In a self-care haven, everything should feel good. From woven baskets to exposed brick walls, each element should inspire a sense of relaxation and comfort. Cozy textures pull you in for a hug and invite you to be present in the moment.

Create A Spa-Like Ambiance

Let’s start by hanging Eucalyptus in your shower. It’s an easy and affordable way to elevate a basic shower. As you know, I’m a huge fan of lush houseplants that not only purify the air, but also add pops of vibrant green. But real plants aside, you can also create a spa-like ambiance by bringing in natural textures like stone and warm woods.

Nature has a unique way of soothing the soul and restoring our sense of balance. Even something as simple as a floral arrangement on your counter can make you feel at peace.

Remember, don’t be afraid to make your “self-care space” your own. It’s all about designing a space that’s perfect for your self-care routine and embracing the things that bring you peace and happiness. Happy cocooning!
