As I approached my 40th birthday, I found that one life lesson stood out: trust myself. When BrownStyle Magazine offered me the opportunity to document my travel to Trinidad, my first thought was, “Why me?”
It wasn’t just imposter syndrome; there was a real fear about whether or not I could translate my experiences in this vibrant country into words that would resonate with others. In the spirit of trying something new, I signed on for the once-in-a-lifetime trip.
Ahead, read about my unforgettable journey to Trinidad and find out how the cultural experience left me with a renewed sense of peace and personal growth.
Exploring The Beauty And Unity Of Paramin Hills, Trinidad
My journey began in Paramin Hills, just outside Port of Spain, Trinidad’s dynamic capital. Upon my arrival, I instantly felt surrounded by love and community.
Paramin is a place of multigenerational homes where neighbors share resources and greet each other warmly. To see people tending to the land, sharing resources, and cultivating unity beautifully confirmed that my dreams of a peaceful world are not unrealistic.
Guided by Podesta, a Paramin local, we explored this close-knit area.
Breakfast at Aunty Julia’s introduced me to Trinidadian flavors with delicious saltfish and cocoa tea. The saltfish, sautéed with onions, peppers, and tomatoes, offered a burst of sweetness, while the baked cocoa tea, a richer and more robust version of hot chocolate, was nothing short of delightful.
La Vigie Lookout Point was a high point, offering views of Venezuela on clear days. Walking through fields of ginger, celery, and chives, and sampling guavas and lychees, I felt completely immersed in the beauty of Trinidadian nature.
We capped the day with a tour of Stollmeyer’s Castle in the Savannah, where I tasted pholourie for the first time—delectable fried dough balls paired with tamarind and mango chutney.
The day was filled with Soca and dancehall music, making it an exciting start to my Trinidad adventure!
Dancing At Café Mariposa With The Seven Singing Sisters
Our next stop was Café Mariposa in Lopinot, where I met the Seven Singing Sisters—women renowned for their warmth and community spirit.
They encouraged me to dance freely over cocoa beans, a moment that helped me release inhibitions I didn’t even realize I had. The serene backdrop of hummingbirds and soft rain showers made it an unforgettable experience that inspired gratitude and self-expression.
Lunch featured a delicious grain-free plantain fish sandwich topped with pineapple and cocoa. Dessert was equally memorable: avocado and coconut ice cream made from garden ingredients.
The sisters even demonstrated traditional chocolate-making from cocoa beans. I was impressed by Trinidad’s culinary depth as I savored dark chocolate, coconut truffles, and chocolate-covered marshmallows.
Spiritual Exploration At The Sri Dattatreya Yoga Centre
My journey continued with a visit to the Sri Dattatreya Yoga Centre and its 30-foot Hanuman Murti statue. The center exuded a sense of peace, much like the nearby Temple In the Sea.
Built by Sewdass Sadhu as a vow to God after being saved at sea, the temple is a testament to resilience and devotion—a profound stop on my Trinidad journey.
Winston Nanan Caroni Bird Sanctuary: A Must-See Eco-Adventure In Trinidad
A trip highlight was the Winston Nanan Caroni Bird Sanctuary, a cherished place for Trinidad’s national bird, the scarlet ibis.
The sunset boat tour, led by Lester Nanan, was a breathtaking experience. As thousands of scarlet ibises returned to roost, I was awestruck by their beauty. If you are passionate about nature or eco-tourism, Caroni Bird Sanctuary is a 10/10 experience and an absolute must-see in Trinidad.
The Beauty Of Trinidad Goes Far Beyond The Fun Of Carnival
Trinidad’s cultural diversity— shaped by Spanish, East Indian, African, French, British, Portuguese, and Chinese influences— makes the island unique.
While many know Trinidad for its famous Carnival, the island offers so much more—stories, food, and experiences beyond the sun and sand, making it one of the most distinctive Caribbean nations.
Reflecting on this trip, I’m grateful for the opportunity to experience Trinidad authentically. It enriched my life, leaving me feeling like an honorary Trini.
