Soft life is a term we’ve been hearing a lot lately, but to be honest, it was something that seemed unattainable for me as a mother of two special needs children. Between meltdowns, the children not sleeping, and someone always being sick, there never seemed to be time left for me to find peace in self-care and wellness routines.
However, as I learned more about the soft life movement, I quickly realized that it’s a non-negotiable— especially as a mom and caretaker. Taking care of your needs first isn’t selfish, it’s mandatory.
For most of us raising special needs children, we are all our children have. So, how do you find time to pour back into your physical and mental health when there aren’t many people coming through to help with the kids’ daily needs? It’s possible, it just takes serious dedication and intentionality.
In hopes of calming my nervous system and becoming more patient with my littles, I’ve come up with simple ways to indulge in self-care. It’s a day-by-day learning curve, but I’ve found a few hacks to make life easier.
Ahead, see some of the ways I’ve been able to create my own form of a soft life as a mom with Autistic children. They may seem obvious, but they work. Hopefully, they can help you too.
✨ Shopping the sales on Amazon for kids’ tablets with screen protectors.
A meltdown can last hours. Unfortunately, it can sometimes lead to the third broken tablet or television for the month. This is why I always shop for technology when it is on sale. I highly recommend looking for tablets with screen protectors to hopefully minimize damage when a tantrum arises. Trust me, having the right tools will come in handy and provide you with a few hours of quiet time as you embark on your soft life journey.

✨ Finding stress relief in coloring.
When I need a moment of peace and joy, I turn to the relaxing benefits of coloring. I love that it helps you slow down and tap into your creative side. It is also a great time to meditate and get into the zone. FYI: There are several adult coloring books available to shop.
✨ Reading a good book.
Reading is another great way to relax your mind and immerse yourself in a different world. Audiobooks and Kindle books are all great options. It’s all about finding a book that will have you excited to enjoy some quiet time.
✨ Taking a hot bath.
Hot baths not only help to relax your body, but it also helps to relax your muscles. If you need something to keep your little one occupied during your self-care moment, consider getting them a bin to sit in next to the tub. Make it fun by giving them bath toys to play with.
✨ Enjoying an occasional “me” day.
Once a month utilize in-home respite or take your little one to a facility so you can have a night to sleep, hang out, or just take a walk. Remember, taking time for yourself is important to recharge and help you become a better caretaker.
✨ BONUS: Hiring a cleaning service.
If funds allow, hire help. Cleaning services are typically affordable and afford you time to focus on what matters— you and your little ones! Having someone come in to clean your house and do your laundry will not only help a great deal, but it will also free you up to be able to live your soft life in a clean space that brings you joy.
Ultimately, do what you must for you first because without you, nothing runs.
