When it comes to music, Soca is always on my playlist. It’s hard not to love the feel-good music that makes you want to wine, jump, and chip down the road.

While I don’t have a favorite artist (because they are ALL amazing), I find myself drawn to artists who celebrate women and encourage the strength of sisterhood. One of the women in my rotation is Nessa Preppy (born Vanessa John).

Known for her sultry energy and captivating rhythms, the “Issa Snack” singer has earned her title as the “It Girl” of Soca.

Over the years, I’ve curated a playlist of her hits— from “Majah” to “Tingo”— so needless to say, I was excited to sit down and chat with the beautiful soul about her latest music, how she defines self-care when at home, traveling, and life as a newlywed. Below, read the highlights of our candid conversation.

New Music, New Vibes, And Plenty Of Good Energy

Staying motivated in the music industry isn’t always easy, but Nessa finds inspiration in the world around her. According to the artist, she finds inspiration during long car rides, where she jots down thoughts and feelings that come to mind. “It allows me to capture my genuine emotions and turn them into music that resonates with the people,” she tells BrownStyle Magazine exclusively.

She also focuses on good vibes and channels them into her music, particularly during Carnival, which she describes as a time of pure fun and creativity.

When discussing her musical influences, Nessa mentioned The Weeknd and Michael Jackson as artists that bring her joy. These influences are evident in her music, which blends traditional Soca with contemporary sounds. “I admire them because of their use of falsetto and ability to create amazing music,” she explains.

Lately, the German-born, Trini-bred singer has been busy in the studio. Nessa Preppy recently dropped her new single, “Motion” — a song with a distinct R&B vibe that effortlessly blends with her Soca sound.

“I am so thankful to my team of writers and producers for understanding my vibe and helping me step outside my comfort zone,” she shares with enthusiasm about the feel-good song that was created to make listeners want to wine and have a good time. “I want people to know that the vibe is the same and Soca is always present, but I wanted to add a little twist.”

Soca Collaborations And New Music

Nessa feels very blessed to have collaborated with many Soca greats including Patrice Roberts, and Machel Montano. “I am so fortunate to have worked with many amazing people in my career. It is something I don’t take for granted,” she tells us.

One of Nessa’s standout collaborations is “Who Ready!” with Alison Hinds, also known as the “Queen of Soca.”

Nessa Preppy fondly recalled her first meeting with Alison, describing her as kind and inspiring. “Working with such a legend in the Soca community was a dream come true. The energy Alison brought to the project was unparalleled and I would love to work with her again,” she notes.

Looking ahead, Nessa hinted at exciting new projects. This includes an upcoming release of her sophomore album titled, ‘Little Miss Arima’. While she kept details under wraps, she assured fans that there’s plenty to look forward to.

Messages Of Positivity And Love

Nessa’s music is more than just catchy beats— it’s about spreading positivity and self-love. She hopes that listeners feel a sense of unity and sisterhood through her songs. “I want people to listen to my music and feel like we are in this together,” she mentions.

Her advice to aspiring musicians is simple yet profound: “Just keep doing you and don’t let anybody put you down. People are going to say things here and there, but you have to listen to what helps you on your path and remember that it is a process that doesn’t always happen overnight. You have to put in the work.”

Embracing Self-Care On The Daily

Balancing a busy career with personal time can be challenging, but Nessa has her ways. This includes catching up on movies and getting lost in a good book.

“I look forward to curling up in the bed or on a comfy couch and reading a good book,” she shares, adding she also likes to catch up with movies and shows on Netflix. “These activities provide me with much-needed relaxation and just a time to escape the hustle.”

Nessa’s hectic schedule makes self-care essential. After a long day, she enjoys a shower. “I love to come home and shower. It’s so refreshing and makes me feel like I am washing away any heaviness or negativity.”

Following her shower, she has a skincare routine that includes a face scrub, retinol, and rosemary water. “This ritual helps me unwind and feel rejuvenated,” Nessa Preppy adds.

Additionally, getting her nails done is a part of her self-care routine that she cherishes. “I love a good manicure and pedicure because it makes me feel like I am taking the time to care for myself the way I should,” the artist shares.

When it comes to luxury, Nessa has a weakness for shoes. “I love shoes,” she reveals with a chuckle. “I used to be ridiculous with splurging on shoes, but now I am very careful with how I spend my money.”

Staying Connected With Her Fans

Despite her fame, Nessa remains grounded and connected to her roots. She’s active on social media, but she also values real-world interactions.

In Trinidad, she enjoys walking around with her family and friends and engaging with her community. “I don’t feel like they are fans because I am such a regular girl,” she said, highlighting her down-to-earth nature. She is known to attend events and party with the people while taking pics and dancing until the sun comes up.

Nessa’s authenticity shines through in her interactions with followers. Whether she’s taking pictures in clubs or having conversations with supporters, she makes an effort to show love and appreciation for those who support her.

A New Chapter: Married Life And Beyond

Recently, Nessa embarked on a new chapter in her life as a married woman. When asked about married life, she noted that their relationship has only gotten stronger.

“My husband and I are enjoying the moment and making the most of our time together,” she tells us about their honeymoon time.

Reflecting on her wedding day, Nessa shared a memorable moment from the reception. “I realized the beauty of family and friends connecting,” she remembers. “Everyone was having fun grabbing the microphone and taking turns singing. My husband was having a dance battle with his friend. It was so much fun!”

When we asked Nessa what we can expect from her in the future, she said that she will continue to make music that brings joy, energy, and positivity to the Caribbean music industry. “I will continue to create personal and professional milestones and support the Caribbean music industry,” she concludes.
