Self-care is more than creating a lifestyle were you occasionally treat yourself to luxe gifts or sporadically indulge in lavish spa treatments. Instead, it involves putting your overall wellness first and creating healthy habits that positively impact your day. And let it be clear, it does not have to be expensive.

Since our youth, our teachers have taught us about the power of the 5 human senses; taste, hearing, sight, smell, and touch. You use them every day, but have you ever thought about how these five senses can help improve your self-care routine? Allow me to explain the 5-Senses Self-Care Method.

Smell: Find Joy Through Scents

Let’s begin with your morning routine. Many mornings you may be in a rush, but I challenge you to not walk out the door before spritzing on your favorite perfume(s) that brings you joy. It has been scientifically proven that scents have a unique way of boosting your mood and helping you feel your best. Using your sense of smell, find a scent that instantly puts a smile on your face. (Remember, there is no need to purchase an expensive perfume. If you are looking for a more affordable option, try out a fragrance mist.)

If you love home scents, also consider lighting a candle to unwind after a long day. It’s a great way to slow down and live in the moment.

Taste: Treat Yourself To A Homecooked Meal

Eating is highly correlated with our sense of taste. As the day progresses, take some time to slow down and eat a healthy, home-cooked meal. It doesn’t have to be elaborate, but by cooking at home, you are less likely to spend unnecessary money on food and you can ensure that the food you consume nourishes your body from the inside-out.

Touch: Get Moving And Strengthen Your Body

Whenever you can fit it into your schedule, get your body moving. It does not matter if it is early in the morning or late at night, take some time out of your day to exercise. Using your sense of touch, pick up those dumbbells, adjust the ankle weights for your daily walk, or place your hands on the floor and do a pushup. No matter how small it may seem, it will benefit you.

Hearing: Unwind With Relaxing Sounds

Once it is time to wind down, prioritize quality sleep. Adequate sleep benefits your overall health and mood. To set the tone for your night, consider getting a sound machine. For some, a white noise machine is a go-to. For others, the sounds of crashing waves are soothing. Hearing these types of audios sets the vibe for your body to relax and can assist you in getting some much-needed rest.

Sight: Open Your Eyes To Your Surroundings

Lastly, use your weekends to explore your city or hometown. Don’t underestimate your current surroundings. Use your sight to explore somewhere new that’s close to where you live. Check out a local garden, festival, or museum. There are probably some hidden gems right under your nose.
